7 Smart Alternatives to Buying an SUV

If you’ve recently shopped around for a new SUV you may have noticed many of the manufacturer’s are not discounting them as much as they were just a few short months ago.

One of the reasons for this is the large drop in gas prices. SUVs and crossovers are two of the hottest vehicle segments within the new car market.

Dealers are also aware of this and understand they can hold firm on their price because chances are, someone will be in right after you to pay more for it.

If you refuse to pay sticker for an SUV or crossover, there’s still plenty of vehicles out there that provide a lot of the creature comforts of an SUV, like cargo and passenger space, or available all-wheel-drive (AWD). Not to mention many of these SUV alternative vehicles have one more added advantage, they normally get better gas mileage than many of the available SUVs or crossovers, which means these vehicles are much cheaper to own over the long run.

Over at US News and World Report they published their list of the top seven alternative vehicles to buying an SUV. These vehicles were selected based on better ground clearance light off-roading, generous cabin space, spacious cargo areas and available AWD.

We all know there’s no sedan or wagon that can completely match the rugged off-road SUVs abilities, but the vehicles listed below have many features and benefits of their own.

One of two minivans on the list, the Toyota Sienna will fit up to eight people comfortably and is they only minivan currently on the market that offers all-wheel-drive. Many people who have reviewed the Sienna say the vehicle has plenty of power for cruising and overtaking other vehicles on the highway with its 3.5 liter V6 engine. With plenty of cargo space and flexible seating, the Sienna makes a great alternative vehicle to buying an SUV.

One of the oldest and most well-known station wagons on the market belongs to the Subaru Outback. The Outback is equipped with its standard all-wheel-drive system and can seat up to five adults comfortably. This SUV alternative is a great option for smaller families and has better fuel economy than many of the SUVs on the market. Not to mention, the Outback has just about the same cargo carrying space as many of the available midsize SUVs.

There are a couple luxury or premium vehicles on the list also. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon comes in two different trim levels, the E350 comes with a 3.5 liter V6 which provides more than enough power to get the seven passengers to their destination in style. If you have a really large budget, you may want to check out the E63 AMG S. It’s twin-turbocharged 5.5 liter V8 engine pumps out 577 horsepower which makes it one of the only station wagon sports cars available on the market.

Take a look at all the vehicles that made it on the list below.

Competition Always Gets You the Best New Car Price

When negotiating a new car’s price, it’s important to know the dealer invoice price and what other people are paying for the same vehicle in your local area. Otherwise, you won’t know what’s a good price to pay for the vehicle. I highly recommend using an online referral service such as Ryde Shopper or Motor Trend, their quotes will automatically include any discounts or cash-back incentives currently available in the marketplace.
