If you’re a short driver, my apologies, I mean, “vertically challenged.” You know what it’s like to drive a vehicle too large for you.
Finding the best new car for a short person isn’t always the most scientific process. You normally hear tall drivers complain about leg or head room in a vehicle such as a sports car. These same vehicles often irritate shorter drivers also because of their pedal placements, poor lines-of-site, and high body panels (door sills).
All because your smaller in stature doesn’t mean you’re limited to only driving subcompact or compact cars. Larger SUVs and crossovers can provide tailored cockpits that provide a great view of the road ahead for taller and shorter drivers alike.
One of the first thing a shorter driver should look for in any vehicle is how the driver’s area is arranged. While car shopping you should sit in the driver’s seat and see what the visibility is like in the vehicle, you should also see how the seat and all the mirrors can be adjusted before passing judgment on the vehicle.
Consumer Reports did a test with several different sized drivers, the tallest driver was 6 feet 2 inches, and the smallest driver was 5 feet 1 inch. They took a look at vehicles recently tested for driver’s view, seat comfort, access, and driving position. If you’d like to know which 2015 model vehicles rated the best for tall drivers, read my previous article; Top 10 Best and Worst New Cars for Tall Drivers.
What they found is vehicles such as the Subaru Forester and Honda Accord ranked very high for families with a mix of tall or vertically challenged drivers. The worst vehicles for both tall and short drivers are mostly sports cars. The tests show there is no head room for taller drivers and short drivers have a hard time reaching the clutch pedal.
