The #1 best-selling new electric car for 2015 was the Tesla Model S. American's purchased an estimated 26,400 Model S vehicle's in 2015. This is an increase of over 10,000 sales or 59.5 percent over 2014.
The Model S dominated the battery electric vehicle category. Tesla beat out the BMW i3 by over 15,000 sales. BMW sold 1,422 i3's in December for a year-to-date (YTD) number of 11,024. This was also an increase of 81 percent over 2014's sales number of 6,092.
Even with fuel price dropping, electric vehicle sales where on the rise in 2015. Seven of the top 10 cars on the list showed year-over-year sales increases. Some of the largest increases came from the Chevrolet Spark (129.6%), Mercedes B-Class Electric (146.3%), Kia Soul EV (182.7%), and the largest growth came from the VW e-Golf with a whopping 1085.4 percent in sales.
Surprisingly the three vehicles showing year-over-year losses are all small compact vehicles. The number one selling car in 2014, the Nissan Leaf fell to third place in 2015. Nissan only sold 17,269 Leafs for 2015, a -42.8% decrease from the 30,200 sales in 2014. When negotiating an electric vehicle's price, it’s important to know the dealer invoice price and what other people are paying for the same vehicle in your local area. Otherwise, you won’t know what's a good price to pay for the vehicle.
