Have you noticed while driving around on America's streets that some of the smallest cars just happen to be the coolest things on the road? So, how did compact and subcompact cars get so popular? The only thing we can assume is it's because of the uncertain economy mixed with the high cost of fuel.
Even with gas prices leveling out, sales numbers for the compact car category are still climbing. House wives, suburban moms, and commuters are trading in their huge, gas-guzzling SUVs and opting for something smaller and less expensive to drive.
The "small car bug" has also found its way into the hearts of urbanites who want to drive something more fuel-efficient and able to navigate big city roads more easily. Kelley Blue Book took a closer look at this segment and narrowed down the 10 coolest 2015 compact and subcompact models with value oriented designs and make smart-use of the available space.
The coolest affordable compact car is the 2015 Mazda3. It's beautiful, tech-savvy, and a blast to drive with its powerful two-liter engine and 155 horsepower. The vehicle comes in a sedan and sporty hatchback and has a fuel-efficiency averaging about 36 miles to the gallon. Some of the basic trim levels come standard with a multi-function Commander Control, voice command, auto text and voice reply, Bluetooth, six-speaker audio with the Mazda Connect System. There isn't any question why this Mazda3 shows up on the coolest car list, year after year.
For those of you who believe you're not cool unless you're driving on dirt you may want to consider the 2015 Jeep Renegade. The all-new sub-compact SUV comes in at slightly over $18,000, but is just too cool not to be on the list. It comes equipped with a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine producing a strong 184 horsepower. Plenty of power to get you and your passengers down the road or off the beaten path if need be.
The 2015 FIAT 500 just made it on the top 10 list. You can pick up one (well equipped) for around $17,500 at your local dealership. The 500 has 10 cubic feet of trunk space, almost doubling the Mini Cooper. The fuel efficient 1.4 liter, MultiAir, four-cylinder provides its passengers 38 miles per gallon on the highway along with power windows, cruise control, five cup holders and a retractable sunroof. The FIAT 500 is one of the smallest cars on the list, but is also one of the coolest.
